Sony Ericsson W8 Android Powered Walkman Series Smartphone Announced

Sony Ericsson has announced expansion of its Google Android powered Walkman series smartphone with the Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Smartphone, that is based on Google’s somewhat outdated Android 2.1 Eclair operating system (upgradable to 2.2) that combines music, social networking and communication in one colourful phone.

Benefitting from the innovative four corner touch UI debuted on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini, Sony Ericsson YENDO Smartphone, and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, the new Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman series smartphone brings music to consumers’ fingertips.

Music centric Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman smartphone supports quad-band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 network along with dual band 3G HSDPA 900/2100 network and is powered by 600 MHz ARM 11  Quacomm MSM7227 processor with Adreno 200 graphics chipset based on Google Android 2.1 (Eclair) mobile operating system offering Google services and Android Market and scratch-resistant glass screen surface.

Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman smartphone features a 3.0-inch, 16 million colors capable, 320 x 480 pixels TFT Capacitive full touchscreen display made of Scratch-resistant glass (min. pencil hardness 6H) and is equipped with Timescape user interface which is Sony’s user interface that brings together all the various communication channels into a single unified application and Four corner control applications and four customizable icons for ultimate control.

The Sony Ericsson W8 phone comes with 128-MB internal storage in addition to 168-MB of RAM and offers support for microSD expandable memory card with upto 32-GB additional expandable memory allowing unlimited entries phonebook and offers pretty comprehensive data connectivity options including GPRS class 10, EDGE Class 10, WiFi 802.11b/g wireless LAN connection, 3G HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, 3G HSUPA 2.0 Mbps connection, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, and hi-speed microUSB 2.0 port.

Google Android 2.1 powered Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman phone includes 3.2 megapixel Autofocus camera with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution with digital zoom, allowing video recording in VGA resolution at up to 30fps in with multi-codec support. The camera also offers Direct picture upload to Facebook, Geo tagging,  and Sony Ericsson Album application.

Some of the other features of the new Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman smartphone includes FM Radio with RDS and recording, MP3 Walkman media player (MP3/WAV/WMA/eAAC+), video player supporting MP4/WMV/H.263/H.264 3GP video files, JAVA MIDP 2.0, SNS integration, WebKit Web browser, Facebook application, Twitter application, Orkut application, Email, IM, Calendar, Flight mode, Phone book with dialer, Notes, Location-based services, and voice memo.

Being based on Google Android OS, the Sony W8 also comes preloaded with many Android specific applications that includes Google Search, Google Maps, Google Talk, Google Docs, Document viewers and YouTube and allows access to Google Android Market with over 150,000 free and paid applications.

Available in choice of Red, Orange and Azure color offerings, the new Sony Ericsson W8 walkman series music phone comes with with strong Li-Po 1200 mAh standard battery that allows upto 312 hrs standby time and upto 3.5 hrs of talk time. Users can also delight with up to 23 hrs of non-stop music playback on a fully charged battery.

Price and Availability

The Sony Ericsson W8 Walkman Smartphone is currently available only in South East Asia region and is expected to be available in India in early Q3, 2011 for an estimated price of Rs. 9,000 – Rs. 10,000 with one year warranty.
