Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Ultraportable Laptop Announced

Lenovo has today unveiled its latest offering in popular ThinkPad series ultra-portable, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 Laptop which is powered by second generation Intel i7 processor and offers up to 15 hours of battery life with a standard 9-cell battery.


Claimed to be 75 percent faster than comparable ultra-portable in market which comes with low-powered CPU, the new ThinkPad X220 laptop feature smart PC technologies for incredibly long battery life up to 24 hours (with extra battery) and sport a clean, revamped design with hinge-based latching and a giant touchpad in a thinner portable design.

In addition, the ThinkPad X220 also feature improved durability with wider drain-holes in the spill resistant keyboard and a 50% improvement in drop test performance.

The new Lenovo IdeaPad X220 laptop (not to be confused with ThinkPad X220 convertable tablet) is powered by second generation Intel Core i7 Processor, and it features new keyboard design which was first seen in the T400s series laptops with the larger Esc/Del keys and redesigned touchpad.

It seems that on ThinkPad X220 the system control buttons are also re-designed and the system status LEDs which are located below the display have also been simplified.

Only 1.40 Kgs with Li-Ion power pack, the Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop has 12.5–inch SD LED Glare and Multi-touch WXGA display and features self-closing hinges that shut the PCs. The laptop is powered by Intel Graphics Media Accelerator GMA 3150 graphics chipset with upto 128 MB shared video memory that offers widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio in 16M colors. The integrated Intel HD graphics chipset supports Direct x 9.0 acceleration, Dual independent display option, Dynamic Display Detect, and Open GL 1.4.

The Laptop also offers 2-GB  PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHz SDRAM (max 2-GB in 2 DIMM slots), a 350 GB Serial-ATA 5400 rpm 2.5 inch internal harddisk, but no optical drive.

Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop also feature a suite upgrated wireless connectivity options that includes Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/N(draft) Wi-Fi connection along with Bluetooth v2.1+EDR wireless data connection for enhanced wireless connectivity and optional WiMAX, WCDMA, CDMA2000, TS-SCDMA connectivity. In addition, it also sports integrated 10/100 Ethernet Network Card but does not feature internal modem. Integrated Touch Pad features a wider touch pad area which provides two modes to avoid the incident touching of Touch Pad when using a mouse.

Lenovo ThinkPad X220 also offers Lenovo’s own One-Touch-System-Recovery feature and it comes with various software preinstalled such as Shuttle Centre, Power 2 GO, Veriface, Easy Capture 2.5, IGRS Anywhere and Norton anti-virus software.

The laptop offers Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 primes that helps rapid boot, shut down and resume from sleep by tuning the BIOS and other hardware settings. With Intel HD integrated graphics the PCs perform twice as quickly in streaming video, editing photos and loading web pages. Additionally, USB 3.0 technology on select models transfers data lightning fast, up to 10 times that of USB 2.0.

The laptop comes preloaded with Lenovo’s QuickStart 2.0 instant-on software for connecting to the web in just a few seconds after hitting the power button without waiting for Windows to boot and DirectShare that allows to share data with other PCs without the internet.

In addition, the ThinkPad X220 also includes location-based software Maplife mapping, Webcam based face recognition VeriFace and Active Protection system that provides extra protection from sudden hard drive shocks or accidental fall.

Lenovo IdeaPad X220 comes with Windows 7 Home Basic preinstalled and some other features of this laptop includes integrated 1.3 Megapixel resolution webcam, 4-in-1 Media Card Reader supporting SD, SDHC and Multimedia Card (MMC), 2 USB v2.0 ports, Realtek ALC6628 Hi-Definition Audio 5.1 CODEC Hardware with build-in 2 stereo speaker system of 1.5 Watts each and also sports built-in Microphone. In addition it also includes a IEEE1394 Interface for high speed communication between two devices like transferring images without any quality degradation from a stand alone camera or camcorder to a PC.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop offers up to 15 hours of battery life with a standard 9-cell battery which jumps up to 24 hours by adding the new ThinkPad external battery. Users charge the PCs on the external ThinkPad Battery connected to the PC or separately, and a charge indicator shows when the battery reaches a full charge.

The Lenovo IdeaPad X220 laptop is currently available in US for $899 and there is no news about its release in any any other market at this point of time.
