ASUS today announced new offerings in its thin and light notebook segment with two new U Series models, viz. ASUS U35 and ASUS U45 Notebooks, which offer unprecedented performance while maintaining super slim form factors and are based on Intel’s Calpella platform.
The ASUS U35 and U45 notebooks come in at under an inch thick, measuring just 14.8mm at their thinnest points. Their slender forms make them extremely lightweight, while brushed aluminum lids further contribute to keeping the notebooks’ overall weights down.
Both the ASUS U35 and U45 ultra-thin notebooks are powered by standard voltage Intel Core i5 or i3 processors, packing much-needed computing muscle to a breed of notebooks typically associated with compromised performance.
The heat generated by standard voltage CPUs previously made their use unfeasible in super slim notebooks, but ASUS’ engineers have found a way to incorporate them without any detrimental thermal effects.
Both ASUS U35 and U45 ultra-thin notebooks feature ASUS’ exclusive Super Hybrid Engine (SHE), which is capable of intelligently increasing the frequency in order to handle heavy processing loads.
Few tests in PCMark05 have proven that the i5 450M processor of the U35 and U45 is capable of setting 10.3% higher CPU benchmarks with SHE activated.
The ASUS U35 and U45 notebooks boast battery lives of over 10 hours, making them perfect devices for all-day, on-the-go computing.
When performing less demanding tasks, SHE cuts back on the energy deployed, extending battery life to deliver a total battery running time of 11.5 hours.
ASUS U35 is equipped with 13.3-inch widescreen LED backlit display while ASUS U45 notebook features a larger 14.1-inch WSVGA LED Backlit 120 Hz display powered by NVIDIA GeForce GT 300M discrete graphics solution with 512-MB dedicated DDR3 1066 MHz video RAM supportin NVIDIA Optimus Technology delivering maximum resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels in 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio allowing full support of full 1080p HD video experience.
Both notebooks are powered by NVIDIA Optimus technology which auto-switches between the dedicated GeForce G310M and integrated Intel HD GPUs to suit the intensity of the graphics being rendered—leading to additional power savings and longer battery life.
The screen forms the middle portion of the display frame and is flanked on the sides by stereo speakers. Just above this is an integrated 0.3 Megapixel webcam, placed in the bezel above the LCD.
Both models also include integrated WiFi 802.11b/g/n(draft) Wireless LAN mini PCI-E connection and comes with optional Bluetooth v2.1 wireless card, integrated 10/100 Mbit Ethernet LAN connection, an integrated 56kbps Modem/Fax connection, HDMI port and sports 3 USB v2.0 ports including a separate eSATA port, full ExpressCard/54 slot, mic and headphone ports.
Despite their svelte profiles, the U35 and U45 are equipped with potent audio capabilities, delivering high fidelity sound through their Altec Lansing speakers, which are complemented by SRS Premium Sound technology.
ASUS has not yet revealed prices or availability of these ASUS U35 and U45 ultra-thin notebooks in India market.
