Sony Xperia X8 Smartphone Powered by Google Android 2.1 OS Announced

Sony Ericsson has today officially introducing a brand new member to the 2010 Xperia line-up, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 smartphone that takes the best from Xperia X10 and the Xperia X10 Mini products into a new price point (under 200 Euro Retail) that will give consumers a greater choice and attract a new audience for touch screen Android phones.


The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8, also known as Shakira, is a great entertainment smartphone that extends the appeal of the Xperia collection to new market segments. The phone is really compact at 99 x 54 x 15 mm in size and weighs only 104 gms.

The user interface is similar to that of the Xperia X10 Mini, with the four-corners that give easy one hand use and can be customised for one touch access to your favourite applications.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 also includes Timescape for easy access to all your social networking and the infinite button for one click access to a world of content. The open Android v1.8 / v2.1 (Eclair) operating system delivers great smartphone functionality and access to over 50,000 applications on Android Market.

The launch release of Android OS for the Xperia X8 is still to be determined and this phone will either launch on Android 1.6 with a subsequent upgrade to Android 2.1 a few weeks later or will launch on Android 2.1. The final decision will be taken on a market-by-market basis.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 is perfect for enjoying multimedia entertainment. Whether it’s a game from the Android Market, the latest funny clips on YouTube or browsing the web, the 3-inch screen means you won’t miss a thing. Discover and download songs from PlayNow, then listen to all your music using the 3.5mm headphone jack. If you are feeling more creative, there’s a 3.2 MP camera and video recording functionality.

The XPERIA X8 smartphone supports GSM GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS HSPA 900/2100 and UMTS HSPA 800/850/1900/2100 network and is powered by 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 processor and it runs on Google Android 2.1 (Eclair) mobile operating system with Google services and Android Market and is equipped with Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate and scratch-resistant glass screen surface.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 smartphone features a 3.0-inch, 16 million colors capable, 320 x 480 pixels HVGA TFT Capacitive full touchscreen display made of Scratch-resistant glass (min. pencil hardness 6H) and is equipped with Timescape user interface which is Sony’s user interface that brings together all the various communication channels into a single unified application and Four corner control applications and four customizable icons for ultimate control.


Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 phone comes with 128-MB internal memory and offers support for microSD expandable memory card with upto 16-GB additional expandable memory and offers pretty comprehensive data connectivity options including GPRS class 10, EDGE Class 10, 3G HSDPA 384 kbps, and 3G HSUPA, in addition to built-in WiFi 802.11b/g/wireless network support along with Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, and hi-speed microUSB 2.0 port.

Available in choice of White, Dark Blue/White, Aqua Blue/White, Pink/White and Silver/White offerings, the new  Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 comes with with strong Li-Po 1200 mAh standard battery that allows upto 285 hrs standby time and upto 4-hrs of talk time with 2G functioning and also features 3.5 mm audio port, and JAVA MIDP 2.0 support.

Google Android 2.1 powered Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 smartphone features 3.2 megapixel Autofocus camera with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution which also allows quality video recoding capability in with multi-codec support. The camera also offers Direct picture upload to Facebook, Geo tagging,  and Sony Ericsson Album application. Besides offering Geo-tagging, smile and blink detection functionality, the camera is also equipped with integrated LED flash.

Some of the other features of the new Xperia X8 handset includes FM Radio with RDS and recording, MP3 media player (MP3/WAV/WMA/eAAC+) , video player supporting MP4/WMV/H.263/H.264 3GP video files, JAVA MIDP 2.0, WebKit Web browser, Facebook application, Push Email, IM, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support with Dataviz RoadSync, Calendar, Flight mode, Phone book with dialer, Sony Ericsson Home with Widget, Notes and Location-based services.

The Xperia X8 comes equipped with GPS receiver with A-GPS support offering Google Maps 3.0 and Wisepilot turn-by-turn navigation application.

In addition, the phone also comes preloaded with many Android specific applications that includes Google Search, Google Maps, Google Talk, Google Docs, Document viewers and YouTube.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 smartphone is expected to be available in Q3, 2010 but in select markets including India.
