Sony-Ericsson YARI Mobilephone With Gesture Gaming Launched

Sony Ericsson has today announced the launch of Sony-Ericsson YARI, the first mobile phone with gesture gaming ability (outside the Japanese market) that is a slide-up style quad-band GSM, and 3G HSDPA network ready mobilephone which features 2.4-inch 265K TFT display, integrated 5.0 Megapixels autofocus digital camera and integrated GPS receiver with A-GPS support.

With a variety of gesture games to choose from, for keeping fit and stay in shape or just want to beat best score at tennis or boxing, the Sony Ericsson YARI also offers a mix of pre loaded motion and standard games. With Gesture gaming user moves their body to play instead of pressing buttons on the phone, giving a fun experience that even helps keep fit besides entertainment.

To enhance gaming experience Sony Ericsson YARI comes complete with the EC500 phone stand that is a small and portable unit and it comes with an integrated keyring which makes it easy to carry. To pump up the volume while on the move, one can use the Outdoor Wireless Speaker MS500 that is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, and so light it can be taken anywhere and everywhere.

In addition to gesture games, the Sony Ericsson YARI phone also introduces a games carousel that allows you to access all your games from your desktop and to browse downloadable content on PlayNow arena.  You can view content by category and choose to browse free or premium content.

The Sony Ericsson YARI slide-up mobilephone comes with 60-MB shared internal memory and it offers Memory Stick Micro (M2) support with up to 16 GB maximum memory card. It comes with 1-GB memory card as package. The main internal storage memory allows storage of up to 1000 phone numbers in a 20 fields contact book and handset also offers 30 dialed, 30 received, 30 missed calls records.

The handset sports built-in accelerometer that allows automatic switching of screen orientation as the phone is tilted between portrait and landscape mode. The accelerometer motion-sensor also reflects in most of media functions, such as the photo gallery, music player, video player and web browser.

Data Connectivity

Supporting Polyphonic 72 channels ringtones along with MP3 ringtones and AAC ringtones, the new Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone offers exhaustive options for data connection. The mobile handset offers GPRS Class 10 connection with upto 48 kbps speed, 3G – HSDPA 900 / 2100 connection with upto 3.6 Mbps network connection, and EDGE Class 10 with upto 236.8 kbps speed connection. There is no WiFi connectivity though.

The Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone also sports Bluetooth v2.0 wireless connection with A2DP and offers USB v2.0 port for wired data connectivity. The mobilephone also offers USB Mass storage function for storing all sorts of contents for sharing between PC and mobilephone.

The EDGE Class 10 network connection offered by Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone allows ultra fast data transmissions, and faster downloads and file transfers, while Bluetooth technology enables communication with other Bluetooth compatible devices and gadgets such as color printers, PDAs and laptops for instant sync-ups, data transfer and print jobs in a flash.

The built-in Bluetooth v2.0 with Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP), Sony YARI handset allows listening to music on bluetooth compatible headset absolutely wire-free and in full stereo.

Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone is equipped with standard fast USB v2.0 port (miniUSB port) which is used for both power recharging and PC connectivity for data exchange.

USB Mass storage Mode

The Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone also supports a USB mass storage mode, allowing storage of important files like documents, images, and music files. The USB mass storage mode does not require any special setup or software installation on any PC the handset is being connected to. Simply connect the YARI handset to the PC running Windows XP or Vista using custom-supplied USB cord and press OK button to start the USB mass storage session and drag-drop files between PC and handset.

5 Megapixels Digital Camera

The Sony-Ericsson YARI mobilephone sports a top class powerful 5.0 Megapixels digital camera that offers 2.5x digital zoom (30 steps) – for both still and video shooting – at maximum resolution of 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution and also offers autofocus, Xenon integrated flash, Image Stabilizer technology and Auto lens cover.

The Sony YARI handset is equipped with a slide-out lens cover that automatically switches on the main 5.0 MP digital camera. The digital camera also offers options for Face Detection, Image Stabilizer and BestPic technology which records upto 9 pictures consecutively and allows users to choose the best.

The VideoDJ application in handset allows the user to add together several chunks of recorded or downloaded video clips to create a continuous video picture which can be further enhanced with music or sound clips.

The digital camera in Sony YARI handset is also equipped with autofocus technology (green ractangle display while shooting) and comes with a powerful integrated flash. The shooting mode supports various options for still and video recording under several adjustable shooting conditions.

Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone allows shooting pictures in three different resolutions: 160 x 120, 640 x 480, 1632 x 1224 pixels (2 MP), and 2592 x 1944 (5 MP) and they are saved in standard JPEG format. Sony Ericsson K850i mobilephone also captures videos in 3GP format with a resolution of 176 x 144 pixels. Recording length is only limited by the available free space on the memory card.

Sony YARI also sports a secondary VGA resolution camera for video calling.


Media Player

The Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone is equipped with full featured MP3 player, the Walkman Mediaplayer v3.0, which offers top-quality sound with hosts of media player features. The phone has integrated speakers and comes with high-quality Sony headphones. One can play, rewind, fast forward, equalise, shuffle tracks and create playlists – just like in any other digital music player.

An optional external dual stereo speakers can play music quite loud and clear. The Media Player supports MP3, AAC and MPEG4 files and file transfer is fairly fast using USB v2.0 interface. The handset also provides facility to gain access to an online music store directly for downloading music tracks straight into the handset.

The Sony Ericsson YARI mobile phone’s media player offers another unique feature, viz the shake-control, which is the easy way to change music track, just by shaking the handset. With Shake control activated, press and hold the Walkman key and flick your wrist. A vibration lets you know that the track is changed and a new song from your current playlist is randomly selected and automatically played.

The MusicDJ feature in Sony YARI mobilephone allows the user to create their own polyphonic ringtone with the use of the built in instrumental sounds & rhythms.

FM Radio With RDS

The Sony Ericsson YARI mobile phone also features an integrated FM Radio with RDS and 20 station memory. The radio can be played through the loud speaker as well. The radio is stereophonic reception and the phone is capable of receiving very clear and stable signal without any interferences in the broadcast.

The RDS feature of FM Radion technology in Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone enables display of the radio station name or even additional information – like artist names or song titles and duration etc. The FM Radio offers 20 stations memory and allows frequency scale of 87.5 up to 108.0 MHz.

GPS with A-GPS:

Sony Ericsson YARI mobilephone handset also sports built-in GPS receiver with integrated Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS) support that links to both satellites and local networks for navigation and it comes with pre-installed Wayfinder Navigator 7 application allowing search for numerous locations, with over-the-air updates of maps, including 2D or 3D area views. In addition, Google Maps application in handset provides location finding, route planning and location search facilities.

Another application, viz. NearMe, is a Sony Ericsson own application that provides location-based search data under a variety of categories near to user’s current location.

The handset also offers a unique feature viz location tagger that allows users automatically tag location details with pictures (like date and time etc) along with the geographical coordinates data.
